Let’s be honest—aging brings change. Our joints get a little stiffer, our balance isn’t quite what it used to be, and the muscle we had in our 30s and 40s starts to decline if we’re not actively maintaining it. But here’s the good news: you can take control of how your body ages—and strength training is one of the most powerful tools to do it.
Why Strength Training?
Muscle isn’t just about looking toned or lifting heavy weights. As we age, maintaining and building strength becomes a key player in preventing falls, staying mobile, and reducing injury risk. Here’s why it’s essential:
Improves Balance and Stability: Strong legs, glutes, and core muscles help you stay steady on your feet.
Supports Joint Health: Muscles protect your joints and take pressure off them, especially important for knees, hips, and the lower back.
Boosts Bone Density: Strength training helps prevent osteoporosis and reduces fracture risk.
Helps with Everyday Tasks: From picking things up off the floor to getting out of a chair, strength keeps your independence intact.
Preventing Falls Starts Now
Most falls happen because of a loss of balance or insufficient strength to recover from a slip. The good news? Falls are preventable with the right movement strategies and strength foundation. We focus on building strength in the hips, thighs, glutes, and core—critical muscle groups for getting up, stepping with confidence, and reacting quickly when needed.
Our Chair Strength Training Program at Norton Summit
We’ve developed a Chair Strength Training program at the Norton Summit Community Centre that brings all of these benefits into a safe, friendly, and welcoming space. This program is specifically designed for those who want to build their strength without having to get on the floor or do high-impact movements.
What to Expect: Seated and supported movements that train the entire body.
Safe for All Levels: No previous experience needed.
Real-World Benefits: Movements that help you feel stronger, steadier, and more confident in your everyday life.
Whether you're recovering from an injury, new to strength training, or just want to feel better in your body, this class is for you.
Coming Soon to the Health Well App
We’re also excited to announce that this Chair Strength Program will be available soon online through the Health Well App alongside the LBM Program. You’ll be able to follow along at home with guided instruction, using just a chair and a few simple tools. It’s perfect for maintaining your strength even if you can’t make it to class.
Let’s Keep Moving, Together
Strength is not just for the young or the athletic. It’s for all of us, especially as we age. It’s never too late to build a stronger, more resilient body—and our community is here to support you every step of the way.
If you’re local, come join us at Norton Summit. If you’re at home, stay tuned for the online release. Let’s train for life—one rep at a time.
